McCain is getting deserved good reviews for his performance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. How can any mainstream Republican not be excited about having a candidate who can do well on venues like this? If memory serves me correctly, Republicans going on late-night comedy shows has been a risky deal. I remember being disappointed with Bush's Letterman appearance. Most of the time, Republicans outright avoid these things, with the recent exception of Newt on The Daily Show, or maybe Bob Dole.
McCain is refreshingly different. The man is not only fearless -- he's funny! He's been on The Daily Show, SNL, Leno, and Letterman (where he first announced his '08 run). He always does pretty good, too.
The McCain campaign is smart to continue these appearances. They may even help to hedge some of the youth vote against Obama. At any rate, let's not repeat the mistake of '96 -- the year of Dole vs. Clinton. Turns out, Dole is hilarious -- but we never got to see that until after the election (too late) -- thanks to his short-sighted campaign advisors. Thankfully, it looks like the McCain folks won't be repeating that error.
With his SNL stint, McCain has not only neutralized the overblow age issue -- he has turned it to his advantage -- reminding voters why he will win in 2008: IT'S THE "OLD-NESS" STUDPID!
...and McCain sings Streisand. Classic!
